In principle, SBS accepts all advertising that complies with relevant legal and regulatory requirements, with limited exceptions (see Guideline 4.3, SBS Commercial, Funding and External Relationships Guidelines).
In relation to advertising for political parties (including individuals contracting on behalf of political parties) and individuals standing for election to a Parliament (election candidates), SBS will treat all advertisers in an equal manner. Not all political parties or election candidates will choose to advertise on SBS, and we cannot control that aspect. This will impact on the range of political advertising that you may see on our platforms.
Political and election advertising is required to include information about who authorised the communication of the material. This enables audiences to clearly understand the political nature of the advertisement, and who is making the claims.
Complaints about the content of commercial advertising are managed through the advertising industry’s self-regulatory scheme which is administered by Ad Standards. However, Ad Standards does not handle complaints about political and election advertising. If you would like to make a complaint about the truth or accuracy of a political or election advertisement, contact the advertiser directly or the relevant electoral authority such as the Australian Electoral Commission.
