SBS classifies content it broadcasts across its TV channels and SBS On Demand (with the exception of news programs, current affairs programs, and sports programs) to ensure they’re suitable for broadcast and to inform audiences about the nature of content.
The guiding principle in the application of the following classifications is context. What is inappropriate and unacceptable in one context may be appropriate and acceptable in another. Factors to consider include: the artistic or educational merit of the production, the purpose of a sequence, the tone, the camera work, the intensity and relevance of the material, the treatment, and the intended audience.
SBS uses the following classification categories:
G - General
PG - Parental Guidance (Parental/guardian guidance recommended for people under 15 years)
M - Mature (Not recommended for people under 15 years)
MA15+ (Mature Audience (Not suitable for people under 15 years)
The classification symbol of the PG, M or MA15+ program being shown will be displayed at the start of the program on SBS TV and as part of the program information on SBS On Demand.
SBS provides advice on the principal reasons for an M and MA15+ classification at the start of the relevant programs on SBS TV and as part of program information on SBS On Demand.
SBS may provide other appropriate classification advice at the start of a program. In particular, SBS will provide appropriate consumer advice at the start of a PG classified program where SBS considers that the program contains material of a strength or intensity which SBS reasonably believes parents or guardians of young children may not expect.
Classification advice is indicated using the following letters and key:
A – adult themes
D – drug references
H – horror
L – language
N – nudity
S – sexual references
V - violence
Our classification guidelines for SBS TV are set out in Appendix 1 of the SBS Code of Practice.
SBS Television Classification Time Zones
SBS will generally broadcast television programs and program promotions on SBS television broadcasting services in accordance with the time zone indicated for each classification category.
