What is "Play from Start"?
"Play from start" lets you restart a live program from the beginning while it is still airing on our free to air channels: SBS, SBS VICELAND and some key live events. You'll see this option as a button within the live stream player on our website and in future updates in other areas of the SBS On Demand app directly.
The restart point is based on timings provided by the SBS On Demand electronic program guide, which may be a few minutes inaccurate if programs run over or are under schedule. As a result, when you select "Play from start", you may see the final minutes of the previous program. If this occurs, you will need to manually scrub forward to reach the beginning of your selected program.
What devices currently support "Play from Start"?
This feature is currently only available on the SBS On Demand website, but will be rolled out to all other devices in due course.
How do I access this feature on the SBS On Demand website?
Start a live stream on the SBS On Demand website and click on the "Play from start" button at the bottom of the video player. You will then be taken to the start of the current program.
Click "Play from start" again if you want to go to the beginning of the previous program. This will work as long as the program is within the 90-minute rewind window.
I was taken to the wrong part of a program—what should I do?
If you're only seeing a small overlap (usually a few minutes), then this is expected due to timing differences in the EPG. You'll need to manually skip forward or scrub ahead a few clicks to catch up with the live stream.
However, if you're being taken significantly back into the wrong content (e.g. 20+ minutes), please contact us so we can investigate.
Why am I seeing ads when I restart a program?
When restarting a live program, you may land in an ad break. Ads cannot be skipped during live playback, so you’ll need to watch until your program begins. These advertisements reflect the normal live broadcast on free to air TV.
Is there a limit to how far back I can restart?
Yes, live playback is limited to 90 minutes. If the program is longer than this and you select “Play from Start,” you’ll be taken back up to 90 minutes and may see a message indicating the 90 minute limit has been reached.
