SBS is subject to the Freedom of Information Act 1982 (Cth) (FOI Act) under which every person has a right to obtain access to documents held by SBS other than exempt documents (and subject to certain other exceptions). SBS is exempt from the operation of the FOI Act in relation to its program material and datacasting content (section 7(2)).

The FOI Act also requires SBS to publish a range of information under the Information Publication Scheme (IPS). SBS's IPS entry can be accessed here.
SBS is also required by the FOI Act to publish on its website a disclosure log listing information which has been released in response to a request for access to an SBS document under the FOI Act. This requirement has applied since 1 May 2011. The SBS disclosure log can be accessed here.
